A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
Amongst the plants we inherited in our garden is a beautiful and spectacular tree peony. It is much admired, and I am trying to propagate it. Each year I leave the seed pods ‘til they are ripened and then plant any fertilised seeds in a pot. I haven’t yet succeeded in growing a new plant because the seeds need two successive cold winters to germinate. The first cold winter sets the roots and only by the second cold spell will the shoots appear.
Our trip to Canada some years ago, took us through land devastated by wildfires – a waste land of burnt- out trees. But our bus driver who had been a ranger in the National Park pointed out, that some of the trees will only reproduce from seed when the heat of the forest fire releases their growth.
Throughout my ministry, I have been privileged to meet people whose faith has germinated in difficult circumstances, whether in the fire and heat of serious illness or in the long chill of broken relationships. While I don’t for a minute believe that God sends adversity to bring people to faith, I do rejoice that for some people, God’s company in difficult times is a life-changing experience.
This week our General Assembly has been meeting and there is much that is difficult and painful before it, as the Commissioners to the Assembly assess and review the progress made in the radical transformation of the organisation. I do pray that whether in the white heat of passion or in the chill of disappointment and anger, that new faith will sprout throughout the Church. The apostle Paul reminds us that ‘We have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed, always carrying around in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For we who are living are always being handed over to death for Jesus’s sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us but life in you.’ (2 Corinthians 4; 7 – 12) We give thanks for the signs of new life we see in Currie Kirk and throughout the Church – and I will keep on, in hope, trying to grow a new tree peony.
Blessings! Anne
