This Sunday, of course, is Mother’s Day and although its origins might lie in the notion of visiting the ‘Mother Church,’ it is now a very different event. For many it is a day of celebration, for others though it is a day of sadness and loss. This Sunday has other names too. It is also known as Laetare Sunday (Rejoice Sunday); Rose Sunday from the colour of the priests vestments; or Refreshment Sunday. It is known as Refreshment Sunday because it comes roughly half way through Lent and for this one day, a relaxation of the very strict fasting rules observed by many churches, was allowed.

But I rather like the idea of ‘Refreshment Sunday. Throughout his ministry, Jesus spent time with friends like Martha, Mary and Lazarus; he spent time enjoying meals with others; he also spent time, on his own, with God. Jesus knew the importance of feeling refreshed and took his disciples off on their own, away from the busyness. This week, let’s think about what refreshes us - ‘restores our souls.’ Perhaps there is a favourite place; the company of particular people; good food; a work of art; a piece of music; an important Bible passage or hymn which you find refreshing. As we reach the middle of Lent, we take a little time for refreshment.

“ The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.” (Mark 6; 30 – 32)

Blessings, Anne
