Greetings from Currie Kirk - 11th July 2025

A message from our Interim Minister Rev Roy Henderson:

In the Interim…

Unless the Lord builds the house,

those who build it labour in vain.

Unless the Lord guards the city,

the guard keeps watch in vain. (Psalm127)

It occurs to me that some of us might find my job title a little bit confusing. What is an Interim Minister? We might wonder too why there wasn’t the usual congregational vote as is customary before a Parish Minister is called to a church?

Over the years you will have been familiar with Interim Moderators who chair Kirk Sessions and oversee the vacancy process as a church seeks a new minister. What is the difference between an Interim Moderator and an Interim Minister, like me?

Interim Moderators are elders or Parish Ministers from anther congregation. Interim Ministers on the other hand, are employed by the Church of Scotland’s Faith Action Committee. Typically they are experienced Parish Ministers who are given additional training and are deployed for up to 2 years depending on the situation. This is arranged with the agreement of the Presbytery and the Faith Action Committee in consultation with congregations. As applications for Interim Ministers are made by Presbytery, on behalf of local congregations, there is no nomination committee or congregational vote.

Essentially, my task at Balerno linked with Currie is to assist you in turning the recent linkage of Currie Kirk and Balerno Parish Church into a union as per the Presbytery of Edinburgh and West Lothian’s plan. A happy outcome when my time comes to move on, will be to see you ready and able to call your own Parish Minister to the united charge. Someone to lead you in mission, worship and service in the years ahead.

May the Lord build his house among us… and may our work be fruitful.
