A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
Here we are at St Valentine’s Day. The origins of the real St Valentine are lost in history - but legend has it that he was a priest who was executed on the orders of Claudius Gothicus in 269AD. He had been preaching the Christian message and also conducting marriages between young men and young women against the emperor’s wishes. It must be admitted that those marriages perhaps had less to do with romance and more to do with the fact that married men were not expected to serve in the army, because it was felt that they were too worried about their wives to be effective. Valentines marriages may have had more to do with draft-dodging than Romance! However, come the 14th of February every year, many cultures celebrate Valentine – for some it is about romance, but for many it is a time to show affection for family members and friends too – a time to celebrate love generally.
For this week, let’s give thanks for the all the loves we know and have known across our lives as we reflect on God’s love as described in Psalm 36:
Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains;
your judgments are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
O continue your steadfast love to those who know you
and your salvation to the upright of heart! (Ps 36; 5 – 10)
Readings and Prayers in Church
The Kirk Session would like to encourage more people to take part in our services, by reading the Bible lessons and by writing prayers, especially prayers for others. If you feel this is something you might be able to help with, look for the Readers notice which will go up in the Link building and sign up for a date that you can manage. If your interest is in writing prayers, then come along to one of two workshops on ‘Writing Prayers for Public Worship’ which will be held in the Lounge of the GCH on Tuesday 25th February at 7pm and on Friday 28th at 10am. These workshops will last between 30 minutes and an hour.
