A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
Not long ago we paid a visit to Strathclyde Country Park. It is a place that we know well having spent many, many hours there in the past. In their younger days, our sons were rowers, and Strathclyde is the home of Scotland’s principal rowing venue.
We learned a lot from our time as rowing parents, including in Mike’s case, the skills required to drive a minibus towing a rather long trailer of rowing boats, along some extremely narrow roads!
The boys like to win, believe me, they liked to win, but it wasn’t all about the winning, they introduced us to the concept of ‘a good lose!’ By that, they meant a race which they hadn’t won, but in which they felt they had rowed well, given all that they could and had enjoyed a really good race against stronger opposition. Sometimes it was about the race itself, rather than a successful outcome. Over the years, their involvement in rowing taught them a lot about endurance, training and just keeping going, despite any setbacks.
The writer to the Hebrews wrote about running with perseverance the race that is before us, taking the perseverance of Jesus as our example. There are times when Christian living feels more a matter of perseverance than of winning especially during these long days of winter. There are times when we all need to be reminded, despite Presbytery Plans and every organisational change, it is about keeping going, being faithful, rather than being successful.
‘Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12; 1 – 3)
Blessings! Anne
Readings and Prayers in Church
The Kirk Session would like to encourage more people to take part in our services, by reading the Bible lessons and by writing prayers, especially prayers for others. If you feel this is something you might be able to help with, look for the Readers notice which will go up in the Link building and sign up for a date that you can manage. If your interest is in writing prayers then come along to one of two workshops on ‘Writing Prayers for Public Worship’ which will be held in the Lounge of the GCH on Tuesday 25th February at 7pm and on Friday 28th at 10am. These workshops will last between 30 minutes and an hour.
News from the Presbytery of Edinburgh and West Lothian
Last week, Presbytery installed as it’s new moderator Rev Dr Sandy Forsyth, minister of Newington Trinity Church (Union of Mayfield Salisbury, Priestfield and Craigmillar Park). Moderators of Presbytery, serve for one year, just like the Moderator of the General Assembly. It will be a busy year for Sandy as there are many services of Union expected and he also holds a post as a part time teaching Fellow in the Department of Practical Theology at New College. Please keep Sandy and his work as Moderator in your prayers.
