A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
Our older grandchildren live on a farm and although their parents are not the farmers, the children are very much in touch, through their other grandparents, with all that is going on in the farming world. For us, as we visit, it is a great reminder of the rhythm of the seasons and also the immense amount of work and effort that goes into the production of our food. We hear, week by week on the journey back from school, about what’s been happening on the farm.
This Sunday, we celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving. The Bible reminds us, that as we give thanks for the Harvest, we are called to share what God has given us with those who are less fortunate. Think of the words from Deuteronomy Chapter 24; 19– 22:
“When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be left for the alien, the orphan, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all your undertakings. When you beat your olive trees, do not strip what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow.
“When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this.
At this time when families and individuals here at home are struggling financially and when we are aware of terrible famine and drought overseas, some caused by climate change and some caused by war, what are the ways in which we help; what are the ways in which we can share God’s goodness?
Blessings! Anne
Worship This Sunday
13th October 2024 - Currie Kirk at 10.30 am. Harvest Thanksgiving Worship led by Rev Susan Galloway. Donations for the Community Foodbank. Followed by a Congregational meeting to vote on Basis of Linking.
Intimations
Please remember the two Congregational Meetings this week.
As we continue our journey towards a Union with our neighbours in Balerno Parish Church, the Presbytery, in consultation with the National Church, have suggested that a temporary period of Linking would allow the two congregations and Kirk Sessions, some time and space to prepare for a stronger eventual Union.
The two congregations and Kirk Sessions have quite different identities and the Presbytery are keen that the strengths of both are carefully built into the new union. Both congregations, though, face similar challenges in terms of their age profile. However, Currie and Balerno are both villages with great potential, so the National Church are offering a period of Interim Ministry. Interim Ministers are highly experienced ministers with additional training which allows them to give strong leadership through periods of change.
The Kirk Sessions of Balerno and of Currie Kirk have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Basis of Linking and in favour of Interim Ministry.
The congregations now have their say.
Sunday 13th October at the close of morning worship, a representative of the Presbytery will convene a meeting at which the Congregation will be invited to vote on the Basis of Linking.
Thursday 17th October at 7pm in the Gibson Craig Halls, both congregations are invited to hear a presentation on Interim Ministry. At the close of the presentation, the congregations will separate and each congregation will be invited to vote on Interim Ministry.
We hope as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to vote. Please remember these meetings in your prayers.
