A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
We were fortunate enough this week to be able to take a couple of nights away and travel down to Peebles. The weather was wonderful, and we walked along the old railway line from Peebles to Innerleithen and back. It was rather more relaxed than many of our outings, partly because we weren’t trying to keep up with grandchildren, and partly because we weren’t fitting the walk in around other demands on our time.
I suspect that’s why we had time to notice birds which seemed to be playing - though I’m sure those who are more knowledgeable about birds will be able to tell me that they were doing something other than having fun. One lot of gulls, on a fast stretch of the river, appeared to be flying up-river for a little, then landing on the water and floating down the current, before flying back up-river again to repeat the exercise. A couple of crows, on the other hand were perched on the rotating bars of the water treatment plant and looked, for all the world, like children on a roundabout.
It reminded me of these verses from Proverbs where we hear the voice of Wisdom:
27When God established the heavens, I was there;
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 then I was beside him, like a master worker,
and I was daily his delight,
playing before him always,
31 playing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race. (Proverbs 8; 27 – 31)
In these verses we hear Wisdom, the creative power of God that is embedded in the world, telling us that is by the power of delight that God created the world, and that God created joyfully while Wisdom was playing. As we continue through this season of creation, we acknowledge all that challenges which face our world, but we also take time to delight in the playfulness of God’s world.
Blessings! Anne
