A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
As we continue to journey through this season of creation, I wanted to share with you words I read recently from Gus Speth, a leading global scientist.
‘I used to think the top environmental problems facing the world were global warming, environmental degradation and eco-system collapse, and that we scientists could fix those problems with enough science. But I was wrong. The real problem is not those three items, but greed, selfishness and apathy. And for that we need a spiritual and cultural transformation. And we scientists don’t know how to do that.’
To an extent, I suspect most of us feel trapped. Our lives are embedded in an economic system that is unjust because it does foster greed and selfishness. All of that is true, but not the end of the story. We can hold accountable our politicians, our small businesses and our large corporations. We have the power to vote, we have the power to spend or not to spend. Most of all we have the power to subvert the system, to resist greed, selfishness and apathy in every small way we can. As we gather for worship Sunday by Sunday we do precisely that. Our actions in gathering together proclaim that God’s kingdom is different. God’s world is about justice, peace, love, compassion and hope. The best hope for our planet is that we should continue to proclaim God’s different values shown to us in Jesus. Ponder this week, on these words from the letter of Timothy.
Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it, but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. But as for you, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. (1 Timothy 6; 6 – 11)
Blessings
Anne.
