Greetings from Currie Kirk - 28th June 2024

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

Last weekend, I attended a coronation! The weather was kind; the streets were packed; there was a great feeling of joy as the procession complete with floats passed by. Finally the queen in her horse drawn carriage was escorted by fairies; flower girls; bower girls; maids of honour; guards; sceptre bearer; and champion to the site of her coronation.

For one of my great-nieces, it was a day she’ll never forget. Indeed it might be quite hard for her to better the experience of being Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Gala Queen anytime soon! The speeches at this children’s pageant were about justice; fairness; peace and kindness – I suspect that in tone they echo every adult coronation, swearing in or investiture that has ever been.

The reality of human living is that we are not always good about justice; fairness; peace or kindness on a day to day basis. Which is why I rather like the recent trend in Christian writing to refer to the ‘kin-dom’ of God.’ That is not, in any sense, to suggest that God is not King; Sovereign; Ruler – whatever title you care to use, but it does remind us that God’s rule is one of invitation. We are invited to live God’s values; rather than coerced into obedience. God, invites us to be part of his ‘Kin-dom’ where we, in love, treat one another as kin.

34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, an expert in the law, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37 He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22)

Blessings!

 Anne
