Greetings from Currie Kirk - 14th June 2024

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

As ever at this time of year, I wonder about weeds. Why is it that weeds grow faster and more abundantly than any of my cultivated plants? Why can a flower bed that looked clear of weeds one night, be over-run with them the following morning? Why when there are  weeds that I dig out again and again and again, convinced that this time, I’ve eradicated every last piece of root do they still manage to grow – or worse, spread to a different part of the garden?

This week my Bible readings have taken me to the parables of the seeds that grow by themselves and the mustard seed. (Mark 4; 26 – 32).

He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.  But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle because the harvest has come.”

He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it?  It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

These parables remind us, that the Kingdom of God is persistent, grows from tiny seeds, grows whether we are paying attention or not – a bit like the weeds in our gardens.

Blessings!

Anne
