Weekly Letter 29 - 19th April 2024

Greetings from Currie Kirk - 19.04.2024

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

Like many, many people, I love the image of Jesus as our Shepherd. He said “I am the good shepherd.” Most of us find great comfort too in the words of the 23rd Psalm with its shepherding images. When I was a child, there was a poster in the Sunday School room of Jesus with his shiny white robe, halo and golden shepherd’s crook whilst a couple of equally shiny white lambs played behind him. The reality of sheep and shepherds is somewhat different, is it not. Recently a farmer posted and image of the carcases of some of his sheep, killed in a dog attack. Speaking the other day with my daughter in law, whose family are farmers, she mentioned what a difficult time they were having with the lambing this year because of the rain. Her family are lucky in that they lamb indoors in a shed, but the fields are so wet that they can’t get the ewes and lambs out to make room for others coming in. Those farms where they traditionally lamb outside, are faced with even greater problems. Sometimes, the sheep themselves don’t help. I remember as a child, watching as one of my uncle’s sheep found a way through the fence and out onto the main road. By the time we got inside to tell the adults, the rest of the flock were in the process of following their leader into danger.

It is one of the strengths of the Christian faith, that Jesus deals with the realities of life. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”(John 10; 11).  Jesus knows and is prepared to pay the cost of being our shepherd, walking with us through the ‘valley of the shadow of death,’ even laying down his life so that we might have everlasting life.

Blessings! Anne

Walking Group

Next Church walk will be on Sunday 21 April.  We are heading off, all being well, to Cramond Island. This will be tide dependent of course. If not suitable tide times we will either head up river towards Queensferry road or along the prom towards Leith. To decide on the day. It will be muddy etc if we make the Island so suitable footwear and sticks if required. We will need a couple of cars. Perhaps bring bottle of water and sandwich if you want.

Hope there will be a good turnout at the start of our spring/ summer timetable.

New comers most welcome or if any one just wants a one off that’s fine.
