A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:
Over the next few weeks, we will hear a lot about Mary, Joseph, Angels, Shepherds and Wise Men, but in the rush to get to Christmas, we sometimes skip over some of the other characters in the Bible stories about the birth of Jesus. If you turn to the first chapter of Luke’s gospel, you will find the story of two people, Zechariah and Elizabeth - an older couple. They were good people, of the priestly family, but just ordinary people. Elizabeth was the cousin of Mary, mother of Jesus. Zechariah and Elizabeth had longed for a child, but it seemed, their longings and their prayers were not to be answered. That is, until an angel appears to Zechariah while he is on duty at the Temple and promises him a Son. Zechariah is a little disbelieving because he and Elizabeth were so old and so the angel tells him, he won’t be able to speak until his Son is born. In due course, their son, John was born and Zechariah recovers the power of speech and reveals to everyone that John will be the forerunner, the one who will go before the Messiah to prepare his way. Zechariah said Because of the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break[i] upon[j] us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
This Advent season as we prepare for Jesus’ birth, we long for the world to be guided in the way of peace.
Blessings! Anne
