Weekly Letter 10 - 24th November 2023

Greetings from Currie Kirk - 24th November 2023

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

This coming Sunday marks the end of the Church Year. After this, we move into the Advent season and a whole new year. This Sunday is traditionally known as ‘Christ the King Sunday’ or ‘Reign of Christ Sunday.’ In some ways, we feel the overtones of kings and kingdoms sit less comfortably with us now than they did 2000 years ago, but that would be to assume that God’s kingdom is like any human kingdom, whereas the Bible promises it is not. When Jesus was brought before Pilate on trial, Pilate asked him if he was a King and Jesus explained “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” (John 18; 36). When we describe Jesus as King, it is not about power or control or wealth or armies, rather Jesus shows us a different Kingdom - God’s kingdom of love, and a different way of ruling - through compassion, service, and forgiveness. When we look around our world at the mess created by human kingdoms, human rulers, human power figures, Christ, King of our hearts, offers us hope that the world can be different.

Blessings! Anne
